Recently my uncle visited my folks around the same time I'm was visiting them. My uncle and aunt were back from their recent trip to US of A and UK. Before I go any further, let me tell you about his back ground. He is a retired professor and was also my 12th grade teacher. He hails from coastal region of Karnataka and has made Mangalore his residence for over couple of decades and will not change it for rest of his life. He loves travelling and has traveled the length and breath of India as a tourist (all the fingers on ones hand would not be enough to count the places he has visited) and now he tours abroad claiming that he has see everything that India has to offer.
Now coming back to his trip, he didn't want to be a typical tourist visiting America and just see the east cost and return back. He wanted to experience the culture; thus he decided to travel from east cost and west cost and then to travel to UK as well. What fascinated me about his trip was his account of western culture. He surely didn't like the culture but the humor he uses to convey that was just outstanding. According to him as one moves from one cost to the other, the temperature rises up and so do the cloths worn by the ladies.
He claims the difference between Islamic woman and a American women is just palm of ones hand. One shows as much while the other covers as much. :D
His perception of the culture was mainly around the family and its values. He despised the fact that people changed their partners as they changed their cloths. He based his theory on talking to the locals on his journey. He also didn't like the coffee or tea as it didn't have any milk in it. According to him it is not a country in which a child should grow up. He suggests that an Indian should move abroad, tighten his belt and come back to India after couple of years of work life.
The other side of coin, two colleagues of mine from Italy (one an Italian and the other Turkish Italian) traveled to India to kick start a project which I had sold to a client. They traveled to Bangalore and on their way back they decided to see one of the seven wonders of the world- The Taj Mahal.
People travelling to Banglaore always complain about the traffic and the way the people drive and they did.
When they went to visit the Taj Mahal, one of the guys lost his purse (due to pick pock just like in slumdog millionaire) and had to go through the nightmare of getting all kinds of cards blocked (imaginable if you are in another country). When he came back, you can just imagine all the good things he had to say about the Incredible India.
If these two people were to talk to each other.. and express their opinion.. I wonder what would happen.
ps: Whoever reads this Blog.... Slumdog Millionaire is not a Bollywood movie..!!!!
