Feb 21 2006, Wednesday.. The day I don't think I will ever forget in my life.. !
I had taken leave for 2 days from office, to attend my friend's sisters marriage...It was 175 Km away from Bangalore and he had asked me to come early.
As usual I got up late, ran to saloon, to have a cut and by the time I was ready it was 12.
I knew I was in trouble with aru.. The reason I delayed my start was also 'cos, its difficult to get out of Bangalore after 9 am .
I was already late and then ending having a fight with dad.. With a angry mood I left my house, got in the car and was on my way.
It took me about 1 hr to reach the toll booth i.e after Nellamagala. I reached there by 1:45pm. After that I don't know what got into me.. I was driving like crazy.. Reached Tumkur by 2pm. which is about 40 Km.
Next 30 min I was stuck in the city traffic and again once I was out of Tumkur, I was racing towards Tiptur in no time. Took me about 45 Min to reach Tiptur.
Tiptur, brought back memories of those days when I was doing my engineering.., like the song purani jeans aur guitar. !!
Driving slowly, crossed the college. was on the country side again. Now I was going crazy after driving for a while.. think that it was such a bore to drive when compared to riding.
I was speeding at about 120Km/hr in my Zen when suddenly 2 villagers crossed the road on a TVS champ with out looking, either side of the road. With great difficulty i controlled the car and then bough it to a stop still state. I was so furious that I got out of the car and shouted at top of my voice.. they apologized to me and all I could do was get into the car and drive again.. !!!
Now i was about 10 Km away from my destination.. !! I wanne to reach there as quickly as possible that I was speeding again.. Just when I was outside arasekere, I had to take a right turn, (near the daba and just before the lake), I braked and took the right but when I was turning the steering to get the car back on the road I just couldn't.. I didn't know what to do.. I was turning and all I could see was the signal pole next thing i know.. .. bang.. and 4 turns inside the car.. and my car engine started to cry loudly.. car sleeping on the road.. It all happened in couple of seconds.. I was cursing the car for not switching itself off after having such a crash..
I switched off the engine and looked around to see if i could get out of the car. The only place
i could get out was from the window of the left door, which was totally shattered..
I climbed out of the window, I would see people running towards me to check if I was hurt..
Wow boy, thats when I saw my car.. It was totally shattered... I just couldn't help wondering, how I could have survived.. !!! ??
I guess the only two things saved me.. 1. I was wearing my seat belt and the other I guess blessing from my parents..!!!
As per my car, I have left it in the body shop waiting for insurance.. and me.. back in office working.. ( of course after visiting temple on Saturday with parents)
Will post the snap of my car soon.. ;-)

The long ride back home
Someone (thats me) once said that the ride back is much easier & quicker than the ride forth..
Let me tell you about my long ride back home. From Goa to Bangalore on my Bull. (Royal Enfield Electra-2002 )
It all started when Umi and I decide to attend the Rider Mania. Then after looking at the route, the distance (2500Km aprox) and the condition that we were in (Umi got his bike rebored and I just wanne to have a laid back relaxed, vacation) we decide otherwise. Umi, just wanne to ride his bull so destination didn't really matter to him. So he was ok when I suggested that we go to Goa.
20th Jan 2007 we decide to head towards Mangalore and then ride on the coastal line to Goa. The irony was, though the place was decide a week before, we didn't decide on the route or what we need, how and where we will be putting up in the night. We were so lazy that I got my bull, from service, on 19th at 7:30 . Umi was in J C road looking for spares at 8 O'Clock in the night.
With what ever preparation we had done, we decided to leave early morning at 6-7. We are so much use to the office timing that it was impossible to leave Bangalore before 9. Umi and I met up in front of shell, then headed out of Bangalore. The timing was so right that the road was totally jammed with trucks and cars. With great difficultly we crawled out of bangalore and we were riding high on open road after Nelamagala. Crossing Hassan and then pushing ourselves to reach Sakalashpura by 3. By then we had gauged the bikes and Umi was sure he
couldn't ride more then 60 as his bike still hadn't done 500 Km after re bore. Mangalore was another 120Km. We decide to hit mangalore as early as possible and then catch hold of a mechanic and get the bike checked.
As decided we hit Mangalore by 7 and then Umi though of going to Froth on Top, but i decide otherwise and told Umi that i wanne to visit my Grandma in Karkala . Umi was obligated and finally gave in. We rode to mudabidre and then to Karkala. I guess that was the best ride of the day. The road was narrow, forest kind of , totally dark and lots of curves. Even the gaati ride didn't give us the kind of kick that this ride in the dark gave us. We even had a nice "Catch me if you can" gave with the bus from Mangalore to Mudabhidre. People from Mangalore will know how the bus is driven esp. in the night. :-D
Finally we reached Karkala at 9, and crashed to bed , in my grandmas place by 11. :-)
The Next day Umi had Photo shoot of my grand ma's place , meeting few people , getting a mechanic to check the bike and once the mechanic said his bike was good to go.. Umi was on cloud #9.. So the second day journey start at 11 Pm.. and by 3.. we were in murdeshwar for lunch. We hit Goa(palolem) by 8. and after having a beer.. we decide to get into a tent near the beach for 450Rs. :-((
Next couple of days was just about relaxing on the beach, the beer.. and the B.. :-))
Yeah we did visit the butterfly Island also knows the nude beach and Umi just couldn't miss the opportunity .. { if u need some amazing photos contact Umi.. }
on Wedensday we moved north, baga, riding.. Umi now in his goan dress i.e no helmet, just the shorts and the half sleeve shirt.. and me, as usual totally covered .. :-)
The Ride was amazing with very good roads and many curves.. My foot rest was touching the road while negotiating the turns. It was as i say.. "one hell of a ride"..
We had a smooth ride but for my flat tyre just before Panjim. Umi got a puncharwala who was hardly 100 mts from the place were i had a flat tyre. The tube was to be replaced and the tube, at the guys place costed 300Rs.. :-O lucky that I had a spare one . After re fitting the tyre with my tool kit the guy asked for 80 bucks .. and at this point Umi just could not hold his cool.. he literally shouted at the guy for demanding so much finally after paying him 30 bucks we moved on. At this point i could not resist calling up Chandan asking for the puncher kit and an extra tube to be sent across through Shillu.
Shillu (sweet frnd )was more than happy to carry it for me :-) ( Though I didn't get it punchar kit.. :-(( )
Finally we reached Baga.. and again searching for the place took us about an hour but we got a good deal for 350/-
Thats something I found strange, in palolemthe stay is expensive then food and in baga its the other way round. :-?
From day three, all I was thinking about was how do I was gonne ride back. Sam called up and told us that dank , pusku and he would not be joining us to goa as they didn't get the tickets to goa .
Umi decided that he would ride back to bangalore than putting his bike in VRL or any other as sam was not gonne come. Now the issue was, do i ride back with him or as initally planned i ride back after a day or 2 ?

Finally I decide that I would be leaving on Saturday as against to what I had in mind Sunday after mom reminded me that sunday was their marriage anniversary. I told myself that i could not miss it.. :-)
Next few days i guess I will forward it.. Umi left as planned, he had trouble with his bike in sagar, pulled over in shimoga and made it to bangalore on 26 morning. mean while I was having a layed back time on the beach and sipping my chilled beer.. :-)
On friday night I went to bed at 3 , hmmm it would be saturday morning ... after partying in kamaki with shillu and her friends. I wake up at 6.. then go to bed again tellin myself that i have to ride the whole day and 3 hrs sleep is not good enough.. Finally i could not sleep and got up at 7.. packed up my things, settled the bills, checking the oil etc. I was on the way..
The previouse day i made sure to take the bike to a mechani to get the carb cleaned. There i got to know that there was few water droplets in petrol and thanked god then for giving me the idea of getting the carb cleaned.. :-)
With that i was all set to go.. and 8... I was kissing the air on my way back.. :-)
just outskirts of Panjim I refilled my bull. I had one minor problem that the petrol was spilling out of the tank when it was almost full. So i finally decide to pick up condom and plug the leaking tank. ( as i was thinking about the idea the whole trip) there was a shop in petrol bunk and just like petrol bunks abroad I walked up to the guy and asked him for one.. and he was like .. u need what...? and finally he said they didn't sell it . I was a bit surprised, in Goa, I expected it to be available everywhere.. :-)
The previous day I spent about the
route i would be taking so i almost knew the way. I reached ponda in no time and i was waiting for the stretch that was suppose to be really bad, as told by shillu and her friends, on the way to londa. Once I crossed the so called gathi.. I knew what they where talking about. The road is suppose to be a NH but its worse than a state hight way.. forget it... its even worse than the village roads.. I guess people touring to goa, who had to catch a train from londa, will vouch for it.. I had to ride my bull slowly, fear of petrol spilling from the tank. I was totally covered with mud, thanks to the high frequency of trucks on that road. It was a totally deserted place but for the trucks. so even if i wanne to stop and have a cup of tea, I couldn't. Thats when i started to feel tensed, thinking about "what if my bike were to break down in the middle of this road"," what if my bike has a flat tyre, now that umi is also not there.. :-( ". Now I knew what it ment to be riding alone. Umis words echoed in my mind " Dude all I could hear (in the ghatti, that too in the night, over shimoga ) was the sound of my bullet. I didn't hear any other sound of Vehical in miles ". And at that time.. my nightmares came alive.. My bike was not completing 4 strokes.. I could not go over 10Km.. It was something to do with accelerator , basically the amount of air that went into the engine.... I was about 20 Km away from Londa to get a mechanic. I checked with the locals and they told me that I would get a mechanic after 5Km.. Now all I wanne my bike was to go another 5 Km.. in 10-20Km /hr.. I somehow made it.. i reached a place where there were quite a few trucks.. I walked up to the guy.. and to my disappointment he was a truck mechanic and the guy told me that I had to ride another 10 Km to find a bike mechanic..
wow.. I didnt know how i was gonne make it with the kind of road, i was riding on.. I started off again.. hoping that I would make another 10 Km..
The road was no better and it was already 12 .. and I had hardly coverd 100Km.. 5Km away from londa I came across a small town and was so happy to see a bajaj bike service board that I thanked God quite a few times.... the Mechanic opened the spark plug and was that it was totally covered with carbon.. He asked me If I had a spare spark plug. At that point I cursed Myself.. for not taking the advise of the mechanic the previous day to carry a spare spark plug.
The guy tried to change the spark plug and ride it again, and he told me that its not a problem with the spark plug.. I suggested that could it be a problem with the air filter or the Carborator..He straigh away said no and told that its problem with the inductor near the clutch plates.
And then he told me something which made me think if at all I could make it back home. He told me that I will have to ride another 40Km to reach a place called allawar. He said he could not fix the problem as he was not aware of Bullet parts and told me that he had seen few bullets in allawar so most likely that there would be a bullet mechanic.
He told me that My bike could make it, in the condition it was. Now all I could hang on to was my prayers. I started again and hoping to find a mechanic atleast after reaching the Allawar.
Now the road was better, it was all country side with villages and the people working on the fields but for my bike condition, I couldn't have asked for anything better.
By 2Pm my bike crawled to allawar. Allawar was not a big town, it was just a big village i would say. and after checking up with people for specifically a bullet mechanic, I reached the guy who didn't make me feel that he could fix the bike. He let his assistant remove the spark plug and to my astonishment it was black again. He cleaned it, hit some dry kicks and tried to start it again. Didn't work and then i tried to tell him what the previous mechanic told me.
He removed the clutch cover and I don't know what struck him but he turned back asked me if I had got my bike checked up after leaving bangalore. I told him that i had got the carb cleaned the previous day. He immediately dismantled the carb. When we was looked into it
we found the jet fallen off inside the carb. I didn't know what I wanne to hit myself with. It was something i had suspected and it is something that every biker should know i.e clean the carb.
Now the guy, was more than happy to talk to me openly, with all smiles. I guess I learned another lession (though old) never judge a person quickly. He told me that he was a recident of allawar and learned the bullet fixing skills by experimenting on the police bikes as they were the only once to have it then. He also told me that now they don't get bullets for repair often as police guys don't use bullet (as it drinks lot of petrol) and the govt has given them jeep instead.
He also told me about a guy from hubli who rides this luna every week to bangalore in 8-10 straight and come back the very next day.
After a small chit chat, I thanked them was set to ride again. I left at about 2:30 pm and was just about few meters away from allawar i realised that i was having trouble with my throtel cable. I turned back again and went to mechanic 'cos i didn't know where i would get another bullet mechanic again.

I turned back again and went to mechanic 'cos i didn't know where i would get another bullet mechanic again.
The cable was jammed between the tank and the chase. so the effect. I again thanked the guy and after photo shoot. I was riding hight. :-)
People I got to tell you, the thrill that you get after such a set back is amazing. I had kept the ipod to full volume and I was no longer humming the song. I was shouting.. :-D at top of my voice. I guess I learned another lesson there. In life if you don't have difficulty and set back you will never know the value of achievements and success that you get.
I was, now riding like I do always.... keeping the speedo at 80Km-90Km/hr..
I had another 430Km to cover when i reached Darward/hubli and it was already 3pm.. I started updating the my folks back home and my friends of my where about, every hour or should i say every 100KM that I covered.
The hightway was the kind of one that I hated to the core. i.e Pune- Bangalore hightway, 4 lane, awesome road, without any scenic view, you could easily get bored of riding for about an hour. But on that day I just loved it.. :-) I knew on this kind of road my bike could easily make it. And also the confidence was due to my previous ride to humpi , which i had done with out any hick ups. and the only unknown terrain was the distance till Chitradurga.
Initial estimate was that if i rode at 80Km/hr I should make it near bangalore by say 8-9..
as it was about 400Km..
When i was nearing Davengere, I was stopped by police actually they were generally checking for License , like the city police do. I guess this is the first time I was stopped by the police. Usally when you have saddle bags on your bike and moreover when you riding a bull its very rare the cops stop you. He asked for the License. I told him that I had all the documents, which ever he wants. and give him the biggest smile i could possible give. All he could do was give me the smile back and let me go without checking for the docs. :-)
I rode at that speed but then.. i could only reach Chitradurga by 8... Now the though crossed my mind about staying in Chitradurga and moving on early morning as umi had done (staying in Shimoga over night after having trouble with his bike in the night). Even if i were to have my dinner, which i was not gonne miss as I did with my lunch, and start at 9pm with the current trend i was riding , I would reach Bangalore by about 2-3 am.. thats when my folks would be sleeping.
I called up dad to inform him about my plans. I told him that if i left at 9 i would reach not before 2-3.. and immediatly without allowing me to complete what I had planned he said " No problem, doesn't matter how late its gone be, come home , I will be awake ". I then told him what I had though, he was like "oh you also have that in mind". After hearing my dad, I had to ride back home. It was like he had confidence in me that I could make and he was ready to stay awake, how could I decide against it..
So with that in mind I started from Chitradurga at 9:30. After that nothing much.. but me and my bike and the darkness and oh.. me dancing on the bike.. ;-)
Finally I reached Bangalore at 2.. and my dad and brother welcomed me home.. All I could say was " Happy anniversary Dad" !!!
I'm a part of the bikers club and I have read about the rides that people do.. and I use to wonder is it only the ride that entertains people to do more of them. But I guess its something more than that.. its what other things happens while you ride is something which attracts .. Its totally a different think when you are riding with your friends and when you are riding alone. I feel that when you ride with friends, its more of a trust that you lay on your friends (i.e if something happens you have your friends to help you out ), but when you ride alone, its you and your bike .. ( how much do you trust your bike.. ;-) ) what you do you feel.. ?? let me know..
Finally.. if you are a biker or intrested in biking .... you got to do a solo to actually know what bikers talk about.. and what they go throught.. :-)
Do let me know what you think.. !!! :-D
Till next bog.. keep tailing.. !!
